I started studying Tai Chi because I had an inner ear problem that affected my balance. Ultimately I was diagnosed with Stage 3 cancer and am now a cancer survivor. Tai Chi helped me through this. All through my treatments, it was essential to stay active and doing Tai Chi carried me through these trying times. Even now, when they run tests for flexibility, I am more flexible. The feeling after a good hard practice is indescribable. The calmness that comes over me is more of a need than a want which pushes me to practice harder and learn more.
I began Tai Chi 3 years ago with Master Chen. I had a serious back injury and left side weakness from years of other martial arts practice. Within the first 6 months, my left side began to strengthen without extra focus on that side of my body. Now 3 years later, it feels healthy and strong again.
Master Chen is a diligent, hardworking instructor who is not only a magnificent teacher but an amazing practitioner himself. He has students of all ages and is very good at creating connection and community.
I am Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and am now 78 years old. I am still excited and enthused about our training. I find the forms provide a great tool for improving and sustaining memory. Elizabeth, a few years younger, is also enthusiastic about our practice with Master Chen and feels it has been of great benefit to her neurological health challenges. As a result of his training, her ability to move has been greatly enhanced. In addition, the training is fun and provides an exchange, both social and cultural. Further studies have shown it can reduce chronic pain and anxiety. Benefits have been published by numerous reputable medical practitioners including the Mayo Clinic and Harvard Medical School.
Health Benefits – Qi Gong
The practice of Qi Gong dates back 5,000 years and is the mother of Tai Chi. Translated, Qi Gong, literally means “energy work” and is used to help the practitioner learn to gather and distribute “Qi” or “energy” throughout the body. Qi Gong through dynamic breathing has been used to benefit over all health throughout the world as well as being meditative. There are several styles of Qi Gong and it is especially beneficial for any Tai Chi or martial art practitioner to deepen their practice by understanding the power of proper breathing with movements. Qi Gong has been found to improve quality of life in cancer patients, improve balance, and fight depression. Other studies have found improvements in balance and blood pressure.
